Ongoing Obligations After Citizenship by Investment

Direct citizenship programmes are marketed as having no ongoing obligations, and for the most part that is accurate. The exceptions are specific, and missing one can be expensive.

No Residency Requirement Is Usually Genuine

For Caribbean and Pacific direct-citizenship programmes, the absence of a residency requirement is real. You are not required to live there, visit annually, or demonstrate ties. This is the structural difference between these programmes and residency-by-investment routes in Europe, where presence requirements exist and are the mechanism by which residency eventually becomes citizenship. Do not carry assumptions from one category into the other.

Real Estate Holding Periods Are a Real Obligation

Where citizenship was granted through the real-estate route, a minimum holding period applies, commonly five to seven years depending on the programme. Selling before the period ends can put the basis of the grant in question. Keep the purchase documentation, evidence of continued ownership, and any approvals from the authority. If you intend to exit the property, confirm the exact date you are free to do so rather than relying on memory.

Resale Conditions

A property bought under an approved development may only be resellable to another qualifying applicant, or may need authority approval for the sale. That constrains liquidity in a way buyers frequently underestimate, and it tends to mean the resale market is narrower and prices softer than the original purchase suggested. This is a reason the donation route is often the cleaner choice for buyers whose objective is the passport rather than the asset.

Tax Reporting Does Not Disappear

Your tax obligations are set by where you are tax resident and by your original citizenship if that country taxes on citizenship. Holding a second passport does not remove a filing obligation anywhere. Financial account information is also exchanged between participating countries under the Common Reporting Standard, and accounts are reported on the basis of tax residency, so a second passport does not make an account invisible.

Keep Your Records Permanently

The certificate of naturalisation, the complete application file, proof of the investment and compliance with any holding period, and correspondence with the authority should be kept indefinitely. These are what you will need to register a child, add a spouse, renew a passport, satisfy a bank, or answer a question years from now. Reconstructing them later from a small government department is slow and sometimes impossible.

Stay Reachable

Authorities occasionally need to contact citizens, and programme rules change. Keeping a current address on file with the authority or your agent, and keeping that agent relationship alive, is a small amount of effort that avoids finding out about a change after it has affected you.

Residency Routes Are Different

If your route was a European residence permit rather than direct citizenship, obligations are substantially greater: minimum presence in some programmes, maintaining the qualifying investment, renewing the permit on schedule, and meeting language or integration requirements before citizenship. Those are ongoing commitments, and treating a golden visa as equivalent to a Caribbean passport is the most common structural misunderstanding in this market.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to live in the country after getting citizenship?

For Caribbean and Pacific direct-citizenship programmes, no. There is no residency requirement, no annual visit and no need to demonstrate ties. European residency routes are the opposite.

How long must I keep real estate bought for citizenship?

Commonly five to seven years depending on programme and route. Selling before the period ends can put the basis of the grant in question, so confirm the exact date rather than relying on memory.

Can I sell the property to anyone?

Often not freely. Approved-development property may only be resellable to another qualifying applicant or may need authority approval, which narrows the market and softens prices.

Does a second passport reduce my tax reporting?

No. Obligations follow tax residency and, for some countries, original citizenship. Financial accounts are also reported between countries on the basis of tax residency, so a second passport does not make an account invisible.

What records should I keep, and for how long?

The certificate of naturalisation, full application file, proof of investment and holding-period compliance, and authority correspondence โ€” indefinitely. They are needed for renewals, family additions and bank questions years later.
